Do you need to come to your Tijuana dentist for a root canal?

If you have a tooth ache, there is nothing more painful.
To help our Tijuana dental patients understand a little bit more about why they may need a root canal, we have posted the following information:

When a cavity forms on your tooth, eventually it eats away the enamel until it gets closer and closer to the pulp chamber and nerve inside the tooth.  At first you won't feel anything. Eventually, you will feel some sensitivity to hot and cold. Also, you may feel pain when you eat sweets.  There will come a point where the nerve gets infected, and you will be in constant pain.  Eventually, the pain may go away, but that is not because the tooth is better, it is because the nerve is dead. However, a dangerous infection is still there, posing health risks.

The simplest and least expensive way to avoid these kinds of tooth problems is to see your dentist regularly, and have cavities filled to repair the tooth while they are still small.

Once your tooth has become sensitive, you will likely need a root canal in order to repair it.  What the dentist does, when a root canal is performed, is to clean out the pulp chamber and nerve and blood vessel conduits. The conduits must be thoroughly cleaned, and then packed full of a material called guta percha. (Guta percha is a natural material, and is actually a derivative of a special type of tree bark). With the conduits fill, usually a post is required to strengthen the tooth, along with a core build up to fill in the pulp chamber. When the tooth has been severely damaged by the cavity, and the removal of decay, then the dentist will have to make a cast post. .
Your Tijuana dentist will make cast post is made by making an in impression of the inside of the tooth's pulp chamber and part of a root, then the dental lab will cast a post to fill in .the tooth, thus making an abutment upon which to mount a crown. Sometimes a root canal can be finished off by a white composite resin restoration, but most of the time, it will require a crown

When a tooth has become infected, then a root canal becomes a more difficult treatment.  Your Tijuana dentist will first clean out the conduits and pulp chamber, but then he will have to place medication into the tooth root, rather than the percha.  He will then put a temporary filling in the tooth, and put the patient on a course of antibiotics for at least a week.  After the antibiotic's have done their job, and killed out all the bacteria, then the root canal can be completed on a second visit.  Taking antibiotic's alone, without a root canal, may temporarily alleviate the pain, but it cannot kill out all the infection.  The source of the infection has to be removed, and that source is inside the tooth.

A retreat of a root canal is called for when an old root canal has failed.  This could be caused by further decay or because in the first root canal, some of the bacteria remained in the tooth.

For cosmetic dentistry, when the dentist needs to change the angle of a crooked tooth, a root canal may be called for because the tooth has to be ground down too much and would cause hypersensitivity.
